The Pervasive Issue of Plastic Pollution
On a constant basis, our oceans are burdened with the weight of plastic waste, equivalent to a garbage truck’s load, every single minute.
The pervasive issue of plastic pollution extends far beyond borders, spanning across the globe. Out of the colossal 9.2 billion tonnes of plastic manufactured between 1950 and 2017, an astounding 7 billion tonnes were left to languish in landfills or haphazardly discarded.
The adverse effects of plastic pollution reach beyond mere environmental concerns, disturbing habitats and disrupting natural processes. These detrimental impacts hinder the ability of ecosystems to adapt to the pressing challenges posed by climate change, directly impacting the livelihoods, food production capabilities, and overall well-being of countless individuals across the globe.
More Single-Use Plastic Waste Than Ever
A recent report published on Monday reveals that the world is witnessing an alarming surge in the production of disposable plastic waste, predominantly derived from polymers manufactured using fossil fuels. This concerning trend persists despite concerted global endeavors to combat plastic pollution and curtail carbon emissions.
The Minderoo Foundation, a philanthropic organization, has meticulously compiled the second iteration of the Plastic Waste Makers Index. This comprehensive study discloses that in 2021 alone, an astounding 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste were generated worldwide. Comparatively, this figure surpasses the 2019 statistics by an additional 6 million metric tons, which were presented in the inaugural index release.
It is disheartening to note that the collective increase in plastic waste during this two-year span amounts to nearly one kilogram (equivalent per individual inhabiting our planet. This detrimental surge is predominantly fueled by the escalating demand for flexible packaging options such as films and sachets.
Governments across the globe have recently implemented various measures aimed at mitigating the volume of single-use plastic. These initiatives encompass the prohibition of items like single-use straws, disposable cutlery, food containers, cotton swabs, bags, and balloons.
